Unmountable Boot Volume Blue Screen
If you’ve been experiencing the dreaded unmountable boot volume blue screen, otherwise known as the Blue Screen of Death (BSoD), your information on your drive is at risk. Meaning all your precious data on your hard drive could be lost! But don’t pull your hair out (just yet). Usually it’s fixable, but it does help to be a little tech savvy.
There are a number of different blue screen error codes. I tell a lie, the list of stop error codes is actually pretty darn long, but let’s ignore that for now. Quite often when you see the unmountable boot volume blue screen it’s because of a registry fault; illegal, missing or corrupted entries can wreak havoc with hardware compatibilities. If your boot.ini file is a bit messed up, it might throw up the BSoD because it needs your attention. For this scenario try the recovery steps (for Windows XP) below:

1) First off, restart your computer with the Windows XP installation CD inserted.
2) Hit ‘R’ when you see ‘Welcome to Setup’
3) On the DOS prompt, enter your admin password (if you have one).
4) Now, select which Windows XP installation you want repaired on the ‘Welcome Screen.’
5) At the prompt type: chkdsk /p and hit Enter. A scan should commence searching for any errors.
6) When the process is finished, type: fixboot and let the fixing begin!
7) When prompted to write a new boot sector, hit Y and then EXIT. Now pray that it worked.

If recovery fails, then there’s a chance it could be a hardware issue, although it’s highly unlikely. If a piece of hardware has malfunctioned then the CMOS might not be able to load the boot volume correctly. Check that all peripherals and devices attached to your computer are as they should be. Simply remove all devices and reinsert them securely.
If this doesn’t solve your problems and you’re tired of trying to fix your computer, then you could always take it to a service shop to get it fixed. The upside is that it’ll get seen by someone who knows what they’re doing and will probably get fixed. The downsides are that it can often be pretty costly, and if you have private data on your drive, it probably won’t be for very long.

Defragging your drive on a regular basis can help to speed up your computer, but it won’t solve the issue of the blue screen.
